My very first cel animation. It’s a short animation of a rocket orbiting a small, blue planet. I’ve been wanting to explore cel (or hand-drawn) animation for a time now, so decided it’d give it a go. I read about the 12 principles of animation and searched a few youtube videos in hope of finding the secret behind cel animation, but ended up failing miserably. There’s no secret, only practice.

It’s 24 frames per second but on 2’s instead of 1’s (meaning there are two frames of the same drawing). Each frame was drawn in Procreate and animated in Photoshop.

The rocket is made of 28 drawings, while the small, blue planet is made of 14 drawings. This means the planet is going at twice the speed of the rocket! Interesting...
